For many straightforward high-performance swaps, a rear-wheel-drive 8HP70 is the common starting point. An 8HP45 can suit lighter or more moderate builds. Newer 8HP50/75 and 8HP51/76 units can be excellent transmissions, but their electronics and controller strategy differ from GEN1. The best donor is the one that matches your adapter, output, controller, shifter, packaging and power goal.

8HP45 vs 8HP70
Both are popular GEN1 choices. The 8HP45 generally suits more moderate builds; the 8HP70 is the usual performance-swap target when strength margin matters.
8HP50 vs 8HP75
These GEN2 units are not electronic substitutes for GEN1. Confirm TCU, valve body, shifter and harness plans first.
8HP51 vs 8HP76
These GEN3 choices need a generation-aware control plan. A TurboLamik project requires the appropriate GEN2 valve-body conversion.
BMW vs Dodge 8HP donor transmissions
There is no universal winner. Dodge GEN1 units are popular in 1JZ/2JZ and LS projects because proven adapter, mount and controller combinations exist. BMW 8HP70 N57, 8HP50 B58 and related donors open other adapter and chassis options. Jaguar/Land Rover versions can also work when the matching output, cooler and adapter hardware are planned.

Is an 8HP70 always stronger than an 8HP45?
The 8HP70 is the common higher-capacity GEN1 choice, but reliability depends on the exact donor, condition, calibration, converter, cooling, vehicle weight and use.
Can MaxxECU control every ZF 8HP?
No. Current direct MaxxECU control is for compatible GEN1 8HP45, 8HP70 and 8HP90 units. GEN2 and GEN3 need another strategy.
Can I use an AWD 8HP in a RWD swap?
Sometimes, with donor-specific conversion hardware. Confirm the output, length, mount, driveshaft and controller.
