The best ZF 8HP donor is not decided by brand alone. BMW and Dodge/Chrysler transmissions can both make excellent swap foundations, but their bellhousing, output, electronics, cooling connections and available adapter packages can send a project in very different directions.
Start with the exact transmission—not the marketplace listing
A seller may advertise a unit simply as an “8HP70.” Before buying, ask for a clear photo of the identification tag and confirm the donor vehicle, year, engine, rear- or all-wheel-drive configuration, bellhousing, output and oil-cooler connection. These details determine what adapter, mount, driveshaft and controller hardware you will need.

Controller strategy by generation
GEN1 8HP45/70/90: compatible units can use MaxxECU 8HP control. A TurboLamik dedicated TCU is another route, depending on the complete build.
GEN2 8HP50/75: do not buy on the assumption that GEN1 control applies. Plan the dedicated controller and valve-body package before purchasing the transmission.
GEN3 8HP51/76: TurboLamik projects commonly use the corresponding GEN2 valve body—8HP50 for an 8HP51 and 8HP75 for an 8HP76.
